Walking with you every step of the way

If peace of mind could be dispensed, parents would no doubt make it the world’s most sought-after prescription. Having a trusted paediatrician is the next best thing – someone who has your child’s every interest at heart and the expertise to diagnose and treat medical conditions with precision, compassion and the utmost consideration for every factor at play.

A mother of two herself, Dr Candice Royal is an experienced paediatrician and allergy specialist who has treated patients across South Africa and internationally. Her gentle manner puts children of all ages at ease while her astute observations, clinical rigor, commitment to open communication and meticulous follow-up care; ensures parents and patients alike, can breathe that much easier.

Does Dr Royal only treat children with allergies?

Not at all. While Dr Royal’s patients with suspected or confirmed allergies get the undivided attention and support of one of South Africa’s leading allergists, Dr Royal welcomes every child and treats every childhood ailment. As a paediatric allergist, Dr Royal is a specialist in children’s healthcare who has specialised again in allergology. This double specialisation means that she deals with everything from vaccinations to coughs, all through the insightful lens of her allergy expertise. This enables her to discern the root cause of symptoms – whether a bacteria or virus, or an allergen triggering a particular immune response (an allergic reaction) and how to manage it most effectively.

Why take your child to a paediatrician?

As any parent will know, communicating with children can at times be an art form. When it comes to pain and discomfort, most little ones can only express how they’re feeling through tears. Paediatricians are trained to discover exactly what is wrong and where it hurts while keeping kids feeling as safe and comfortable as possible. And they’re experts on children and child-specific ailments, ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Building a relationship with a caring paediatrician is a gift you can give your child, not only in terms of their health, but for their confidence and entire future view of seeking help when it’s needed.

What to expect at your appointment

Booking an appointment is easy with Dr Royal’s online booking system. Or call her receptionist, Alma Van Zyl, who will also assist you with your forms on arrival. If you book a consultation for an allergic disorder, please ensure your child does not take any antihistamines or oral steroid medication (cortisone) for 3 days prior to your appointment.

Your consultation – whether allergy-related or otherwise – will involve discussion around your child’s healthcare concerns while also exploring other areas of your child’s wellbeing such as growth and development. Dr Royal will carefully examine your child, and any testing will be tailored to their specific needs. Allergic disorders may require skin prick testing, blood tests, lung function testing or food/medication challenges. Thereafter, a comprehensive, personalised management plan will be curated in discussion with you and your family.
